Community Foundation of NCW Awards over $1M in Scholarships

The Community Foundation of NCW has awarded $1,061,700 in scholarships to 228 students from North Central Washington and beyond – the largest award amount and number of student recipients to date.

The Foundation now manages over 120 scholarships established by individuals, families, and businesses from across the region who care deeply about supporting local students’ education. Each scholarship’s criteria is unique and set by the donor, with many seeking to help students with the greatest financial need.

“We are so grateful and delighted to provide financial support to more students than ever before” said Julie Mott, scholarship specialist. “It’s so exciting to know over $1M has been invested in our local students’ futures, and that it’s all because of generous people in our communities who care to make that investment.”

The 30% increase in scholarship awards this year comes largely from a few new scholarships: two established by a bequest from Edna Maguire, which resulted in $195,000 in awards, both supporting students attending Washington State University; and a scholarship established by a bequest from Edith Zur Hausen, resulting in $50,000 in awards, supporting students studying engineering or agriculture.

“These scholarships are going to be life-changing for so many students for years to come” said Beth Stipe, executive director. “These funds will grow over time through the Foundation’s prudent investments, so awards will increase and continue to be granted to students – forever. That’s the power of an endowment, and the incredible gift of leaving a legacy.”
