SUMMARY:Advocacy and Lobbying 101: Legal Tips for 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Advocates
DESCRIPTION:501 Common’s annual nonprofit advocacy training workshop returns on Thursday\, Jan. 25 online. In a big election year\, these sessions are a “must-do” for executives\, community organizers\, policy staff\, and board members. \n501(c)(3)s play an important role in educating the public about policy issues and actions taken by elected officials\, including the President. Elected officials vote on bills\, make public statements and executive decisions\, and set the course for public policy on a wide range of issues. These actions may be consistent with or conflict with a nonprofit’s position on an issue. After this workshop you will have a clear understanding of how to maximize your advocacy\, the kinds of advocacy activities 501(c)(3)s can engage in\, and when an act of communication is considered lobbying. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nHow federal tax law permits lobbying for charities and how lobbying is defined.\nOne easy step most charities can take to maximize the amount they’re allowed to spend on lobbying.\nYearly lobbying limits for charities.\nTips for taking advantage of the narrow definitions of lobbying – which will help charities make the most of their lobbying limit.\nThe application of these rules to ballot measure activities.\n\nAbout our trainer \nQuyen Tu is the Southern California Counsel for the Bolder Advocacy program at Alliance for Justice. She is a long-time active member of the American Bar Association\, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association\, and the Orange County Asian American Bar Association. \nAbout Alliance for Justice / Bolder Advocacy: Alliance for Justice is a national association of over 100 organizations\, representing a broad array of groups committed to progressive values and the creation of an equitable\, just\, and free society. AFJ’s Bolder Advocacy is the leading expert on the legal framework for nonprofit advocacy efforts\, providing definitive information\, resources\, and technical assistance that encourages organizations and their funding partners to fully exercise their rights to be active participants in the democratic process. By decoding and demystifying advocacy rules\, Bolder Advocacy gives nonprofits and foundations the confidence to assertively advocate for community change. \nThis event is a part of the Alliance for Justice’s Bolder Advocacy Initiatives. \nWant to keep up on other 501 Commons events\, training’s\, programs\, discounts\, and grant opportunities? Sign up for our newsletter and bookmark Featured Events by 501 Commons and others. \nHave questions?
